* Prefoer to do / prefer doing
: Use prefer to do / perfer -ing to say what you prefer in general:
일반적으로 선호하는 것을 말할때는 동사로써 prefer를 사용하면서 to R / ~ing가 올 수 있다.
- Structure
I prefer somthing to something else
I prefer doing somthing to doing something else.
I prefer to do something rater than (do) something else.
Ex)
I don't like cities. I prefer to live in the country. or I prefer living in the country.
I prefer to live in the country rather than in a city.
I prefer living in the country to living in a city.
* Would prefer / Would rather
: Use would prefer to say what somebody wants in a particular situation(not in general)
- "Would you prefer tea or coffee?
- Would you rather have tea or coffee?
- I'd prefer to stay home rather than go to the movies.
- I'd rather stay home than go to the movies.
"Should we take the train?"
-> I'd prefer to drive (not I'd prefer driving)
I'd rather drive.(not to drive)
I'm tired. I'd rather not go out tonight, if you don't mind.
Do you want to go out tonight? -> I'd rather not.
* I'd rather you did something.
